Client Overview

Indian Oil Corporation Limited is one of the oldest and most important refinery operators in India, with a strong focus on environmental responsibility and sustainable industrial practices.

The refinery has taken progressive steps towards reducing freshwater consumption and improving water conservation measures across its operations. Through innovative water management initiatives, Digboi Refinery has demonstrated its commitment to sustainability and responsible resource utilization.

The Challenge

Significant freshwater is required for industrial refinery operations for different refinery operations. Water resources management and minimizing environmental footprint were significant sustainability issues at the refinery.

Digboi Refinery planned to put in place the measures and steps of water conservation that would not only minimize the use of the freshwater they used but would also help the company to be sustainable in the long run by means of water reuse, water recycling, and conservation.

ENCORAA ESG’s Role

The project Water Credits / ROUs was successfully executed and completed, demonstrating the significant contribution made by ENCORAA ESG in implementing sustainable water management projects.

Our team:

  • Established the water conservation project opportunity and organized it
  • Evaluated and confirmed the water conservation measures at the refinery
  • Policies and practices for managed project monitoring and
  • Review freshwater consumption reduction measures
  • Helped release Water Credits / Rainwater Offset Units (ROUs)

The project identified the following key sustainability efforts by Digboi Refinery:

  • Water conservation and Groundwater recharge with Storage Cum Percolation Pond (SCP)
  • Utilization of treated wastewater from ETP for operational purposes through recycling and reuse.

A total of 72,96,012 ROUs were successfully issued for water conservation and reduction efforts in freshwater consumption through strategic implementation and smooth execution of the project.

Project Impact

The project brought about substantial environmental and sustainability gains:

  • Savings in freshwater use throughout the refinery’s
  • Support water management for conserving water and recharging groundwater
  • Improved recycled and re-used treated wastewater
  • Improved sustainable water management practices
  • Contribution towards environmental protection and resource conservation

This project is a good example of how a responsible approach to industrial water use can bring tangible environmental benefits and contribute to sustainability.
